第一条混合石斑鱼是杂交品种马来西亚沙巴大学 (UMS) 的研究人员与马来西亚沙巴大学婆罗洲海洋学研究所马来西亚渔业发展局 (LKIM) 和日本现代大学的研究人员合作研究的鱼类物种。杂交石斑鱼是通过虎斑鱼（Mycteroperca Tigris）的卵与巨型石斑鱼（Epinephelus lanceolatus）的精子进行体外受精（IVF）受精而产生的。
